The Company

Established in 1984, our client has been manufacturing quality wood-based products and providing the absolute best packaging and shipping solutions to meet and exceed their customers’ needs.  With over three decades of experience, they have the understanding, technology and staff to efficiently handle the packaging requirements of multiple industries including, but not limited to: automotive, aerospace and defense.  They pride themselves on giving the best product and customer service, from design services to just in time delivery (JIT) and everything in between.  With over $7M in revenues and 38 employees, our client has recently expanded their operations to include a total of 64,000 square foot of ISO & ISPM Certified special packaging manufacturing and distribution facilities in Southeastern, Michigan. 

The Challenge

The founder and President has positioned and sold the majority ownership to their largest customer.  As he slowly detaches himself from day to day operations, the board is seeking a leader to take on this operational mantle.  Seeking an entrepreneurial leader to direct day to day operations, the manufacturing team and customer outreach and interaction.  The board will impower the President to create and present a strategic growth plan for their approval. The Company has expanded their reach of the businesses throughout the Midwest, has developed and secured a growing stream of profitable accounts which this executive must shepherd and grow. The ideal candidate must have distinguished themselves within industrial and commercial markets and will plan, execute and coordinate the business personally.  Leading the collaboration of the management team to deliver results and grow the business within their current markets:  automotive OEM’s, automotive tier-level suppliers, heavy truck, aerospace, military / defense and general industrial clients.

Job Definition

  • Position reports to the Board of Directors
  • Four (4) direct reports including:  Plant Manager, Business Development & Sales Team, Office Manager, Engineering & Design.
  • Profit and loss responsibility for the entire operation; growth oriented – will be encouraged to focus on revenue generation.
  • Builds strong relationships to ensure commitment to sales programs.
  • Interfaces with customers and prospects and leads, mentors and directs internal staff inclusive of operations, and engineering.
  • Provides direction, development and leadership for all departments.
  • Manages the financial performance of all operations, meeting or exceeding the annual budget and profit plan.
  • Utilizes sales forecasts, monthly reports, summaries of major customer contacts / meetings and resulting action plans.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge and understanding of the materials / supplies utilized in the manufacturing of said technology.
  • Manages and resolves commercial issues in a proactive, professional, timely manner that maximizes both company benefits and customer goodwill, proactively escalates issues within customer hierarchy and within company as appropriate to remove roadblocks.
  • Develops annual Fiscal Year sales forecast and assumptions for assigned accounts.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and flexible environment.
  • Provide direction, strategic planning and performance for all manufacturing operations.
  • This position will work closely with the owners (Board of Directors) to establish long-range operating goals and expansion.
  • Frequent interaction with customers to ensure delivery standards and negotiated terms.
  • Ensures that, as the company grows, manufacturing capabilities meet or exceed all industry and customer requirements for cost, quality and responsiveness.
  • Develops and manages budgets for all departments and functions.
  • Establishes and maintains all operations policies and systems and ensures the effective deployment of these policies and systems.
  • Works with Human Resources to hire, train, evaluate, manage staff and resolve plant personnel issues.
  • Reviews operations and confer with plant management, technical or administrative staff to resolve production or processing problems.
  • The ideal candidate will be a seasoned executive with proven ability to select, lead, and support the development of people.
  • The President will have to prove their ability to be easily recognized by employees as an approachable “Leader” who understands the value of teamwork to increase productivity and overall business performance. 
  • Ability to launch multiple customer products in a custom-made environment.
  • In conjunction with the management team set operational and / or performance goals for each department which are achievable and tied to long-term goals.
  • Train and monitor the team’s utilization of established systems and processes to track and optimize productivity and standards, metrics and performance targets to ensure effective return on assets.

Background Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.  Technical orientation preferred.
  • Ten to fifteen years related job and market experience including a minimum of ten (10) years of operations management leadership; an industry insider.
  • Experience interacting with customers, contract negotiations, deliverables, etc.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing systems; exposure and experience interpreting programs and results.
  • Strategic thinker, eager to take initiative, effective at creating, communicating and delivering technically oriented business solutions.
  • Excellent computer and time management skills.
  • Strong facilitation, negotiation, problem solving and presentation skills.
  • Must have experience managing budgets.
