Senior SAP Technical Architect

THE CLIENT:

Our client, Michigan State University, is one of the largest on-campus universities in the United States.  Located in East Lansing, Michigan, MSU sits on a beautifully wooded, 5200 acre campus and has 660 buildings.  It was founded in 1855 and has approximately 44,000 students and 10,000 staff. MSU’s students are from all counties in the state, all 50 states in the US and 125 countries.

The University has 17 degree granting colleges covering more than 200 programs, including a law school and four medical colleges.
 
MSU is a multidimensional institution, providing undergraduate and graduate education, is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is recognized as one of the top 100 research universities in the world. Additionally, it owns 15,000 acres throughout Michigan for agricultural, animal and forestry research.  MSU’s annual budget is $1.6 billion.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Michigan State University is currently involved in the most exciting and far reaching IT project in its history. The institution has created an entirely new department devoted to planning, designing and implementing new business information systems that will overhaul the financial, research and HR/Payroll administration of the University. It is an integrated, modular approach for the system architecture.  The University has chosen SAP for the HR system and Kuali for the Financial System.  Kuali is a newly created system developed by a consortium of universities throughout the US.

The project is very large, complex and challenging and is due to be completed 2010-2011.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Although this critical position does not supervise people directly, it is one that plays a very high level leadership role. The successful candidate will work with team members across several business units.  The University culture is one that rewards self-motivated independence.  Since this is a new project dealing with organizational and technical challenges, this individual should be creative, driven and have a visionary approach to system architecture.

  • Reports to Technical Lead (Solution Architect) of the Project.
  • Lead application development projects using SAP HCM ECC 6.0 of large size, complexity and duration.
  • Provide application architecture direction and guidance to SAP Human Resource/Payroll projects.
  • Supply leadership for applications development as well as business-value cases.
  • Work with the application development staff and achieve consensus through mentoring and team building.
  • Promote the concepts and practices for professional-grade, SAP engineering.
  • Analyze, design and implement complex computer programs in HR/Payroll systems.
  • Independently meet with customers to determine IT status, desires, needs and cross system issues on projects of high sensitivity or complexity, integration of business functions, interface design and database design.
  • Assist with understanding configuration dependencies and interrelationships between data warehouse/business intelligence tools and designs.
  • Act as a resource to other team or department professional staff.
  • Create project plans, project scope, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate activities of programmers.



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree (Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, etc), minimum, required.
  • Expert in SAP HCM ECC 6.0 including payroll in large business environments.
  • Minimum of ten years experience, with expansive work experience in complex technology projects featuring the extensive use of SAP for Human Resources.
  • Critical to have experience in the entire life cycle of a SAP implementation projects, including 3-6 months after implementation has been completed.
  • Ability to work with several different departments, teams and specialty areas.
  • Broad background in many technology environments.
  • Highly skilled in problem resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work in a multi-programmer environment
  • Proven skills in creating business application systems using SM 4.0, PI/XI 7.0, BI 7.0 and
  • EP 7.0.
  • Knowledgeable of large team software development and release cycles.
  • Strong leader, independent in a team environment.
  • In addition to leadership skills, must also be a valuable and participative team player.
  • Must be able to work independently with little guidance.
  • Demonstrate problem solving skills and creative, out-of-the- box thinking
  • Must be flexible and able to work in a high energy, fast paced environment.
  • Achievement-oriented, highly driven individual.
  • Understand the University culture.
